GoodShip* Activation

Don’t just learn AI. Do something with it.

Not just job-ready. Impact-ready.

AI is changing how people learn, work, research, create, communicate and solve problems.

But understanding AI is not the same as feeling confident using it.

AI Activator is GoodShip*’s experiential AI and future-skills programme.

Participants work in multidisciplinary teams on real challenges from real organisations.

  • Research
  • Question
  • Create
  • Prototype
  • Collaborate
  • Present

And they experience how AI can support human creativity and problem solving in the real world.

The technology is moving quickly. Confidence isn’t keeping up.

What AI Activator is
AI Activator is an experiential AI and future-skills programme created by GoodShip*. Participants work in multidisciplinary teams on real organisational challenges while using AI and digital tools to research, create, prototype and present solutions.

AI has moved from an emerging technology conversation into everyday life and work.

People are being told AI will change their job, that they need to learn it, use it and prepare for the future.

That creates excitement. It also creates uncertainty.

Where do you start? Which tools matter? What should you trust, and what shouldn’t you? What happens to human skills? What happens if you’ve never thought of yourself as “technical”?

AI Activator was created to give people somewhere practical to explore those questions. Not through another day of presentations. Through experience.

Confidence comes from doing. Explore AI Activator →

AI is part of the programme. People are the point.

AI Activator teaches people how to work with AI.

But that is only part of what happens. Participants also have to:

Those are human capabilities. And they become more important, not less, as AI becomes more capable.

  • Understand a problem
  • Make decisions
  • Work with people they may not know
  • Communicate
  • Question information
  • Prioritise
  • Create
  • Present their thinking

The objective isn’t producing better prompts. It’s producing more confident, capable people.

Not another AI course.

Unlike conventional AI training focused mainly on tools and prompts, AI Activator combines practical AI use with creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication and confidence.

  • Conventional AI training

Often starts with: here are the tools.

    AI Activator

Starts with: here is the challenge.

  • Conventional AI training

Often focuses on features, prompts and demonstrations.

    AI Activator

Combines AI, research, creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, prototyping and communication.

  • Conventional AI training

Often asks participants to follow examples.

    AI Activator

    Asks participants to make decisions.

  • Conventional AI training

    May finish with a certificate.

    AI Activator

Finishes with something participants have researched, created, built and presented.

  • Conventional AI training

    Can feel abstract.

    AI Activator

Uses real organisations and real challenges.

Real organisations. Real problems. No answer sheet.

  • healthcare
  • education
  • community
  • immersive technology
  • digital platforms
  • social impact

One of the most important parts of AI Activator is the brief.

Participants don’t solve a fictional classroom exercise. They respond to a genuine challenge provided by a business, charity, social enterprise or other organisation.

Which means they have to deal with something conventional learning often removes: ambiguity.

The organisation provides
context
The organisation provides
insight
The organisation provides
feedback
The organisation provides
a real audience for the final work
  • There may be several good answers.
  • There may be constraints.
  • The organisation may change the question.
  • Research may challenge the original assumption.

Real problems create real learning.

The experience

From uncertainty to something tangible.

The exact format changes by cohort, but a full five-day AI Activator typically follows a journey like this.

  1. Day 1

    Explore

Understand AI, the challenge and each other.

    • Programme objectives
    • AI fundamentals
    • Practical tools
    • Responsible use
    • Challenge organisations
    • Team members

The aim is not to rush into solutions. It is to understand the problem.

  2. Day 2

    Question

    Go deeper.

    • Users
    • Context
    • Evidence
    • Assumptions
    • Opportunities

Participants learn that generating an answer is easy. Judging whether it is useful is harder.

  3. Day 3

    Imagine

    Turn understanding into ideas.

    • Generate
    • Compare
    • Challenge
    • Prioritise

AI supports exploration. Human judgement decides where to focus.

  4. Day 4

    Make

    Build something.

    • Prototype
    • Digital product
    • Campaign
    • Concept
    • Service idea
    • Presentation
    • User experience

This is where AI, rapid prototyping and creative technology become particularly useful.

  5. Day 5

    Activate

    Tell the story.

    • The problem
    • Evidence
    • Idea
    • Use of AI
    • Prototype
    • Thinking

Teams present to challenge organisations, partners, peers and invited guests, then reflect on skills, confidence and what they will do differently next.

Tools

The tools will change. The ability to learn won’t.

AI Activator is intentionally not tied to one specific technology platform.

Tools evolve quickly. The important capability is learning how to explore, evaluate, choose, question and combine them.

Challenge partners

Give participants something worth solving.

Organisations can take part without commissioning the programme by becoming a Challenge Partner.

A Challenge Partner provides a genuine organisational question for participant teams to explore, then helps to brief participants, provide context, answer questions, attend the showcase, respond to ideas.

A challenge could be

  • a customer problem
  • community challenge
  • new service
  • communication issue
  • digital opportunity
  • operational problem
  • innovation question

AI Activator is not free consultancy disguised as education.

The primary purpose is participant learning. Challenge organisations should approach the process with curiosity rather than expecting production-ready solutions.

Sponsorship

Create opportunity for someone else.

The organisation funding AI Activator does not have to be the organisation participating.

Businesses, foundations, funders and commissioners can sponsor cohorts for specific groups.

Potential cohorts

  • young people
  • students
  • graduates
  • unemployed people
  • career changers
  • charities
  • community organisations

What changed?

We designed AI Activator to create practical learning. So we measure more than attendance.

Our evaluation looks at changes across:

  • confidence
  • AI capability
  • public speaking
  • critical thinking
  • teamwork
  • career perspective
  • participant satisfaction

Each published statistic is recorded with its cohort, sample size, measurement date, question wording, methodology and source. Metrics from separate cohorts are never combined into one implied study.

What does the programme create for partners?

Alongside participant evidence, we gather feedback from the organisations involved in each cohort.

  • University partners

Student engagement, employability and experiential learning outcomes.

  • Challenge organisations

Quality of outputs and the value of an outside perspective.

  • Employers

Meaningful contact with emerging talent and practical AI use.

  • Programme partners

Programme design, facilitation and delivery quality.

  • Funders

Evidence of participation, confidence and measurable outcomes.

Sometimes the most important outcome happens afterwards.

A programme can create a moment of confidence.

The bigger opportunity is what happens next.

AI Activator helps participants leave with:

  • experience
  • work to talk about
  • practical examples
  • relationships
  • greater confidence
  • a better understanding of where they could fit

GoodShip* also tries to connect participants into wider opportunities through employers, partners, communities, internships, further programmes.

The programme is not intended to be the end of the journey.

Activate confidence. Then give it somewhere to go.

AI Activator in practice.

Cohorts delivered with university, challenge and community partners.

Applied AI through real challenges

LJMU — Psychology cohort

Participants worked in multidisciplinary teams responding to briefs from real organisations, combining AI, research, ideation, prototyping and presentations.

Building confidence through participation

A second cohort worked with challenge partners across technology, education and impact, showing how AI Activator works with participants from different academic backgrounds.

Testing the model

AI Activator pilot

The original pilot established the first evidence around participant satisfaction, confidence and career perspective.

The idea has started getting noticed.

AI Activator has developed from an experiment into one of GoodShip*’s most important programmes.

Its approach to combining creativity, emerging technology and experiential learning has received external recognition, including GoodShip*’s Creative Innovation Award in 2026.

Recognition is useful. It isn’t the point.

The most important evidence remains what participants do and feel differently afterwards.

Using AI well also means knowing when not to use it.

AI Activator does not present AI as automatically accurate, ethical, creative or better.

Participants are encouraged to question:

The objective is confident use. Not blind trust.

  • sources
  • hallucinations
  • bias
  • privacy
  • intellectual property
  • data
  • human judgement
  • appropriate use

Curiosity and scepticism can coexist.

What participants need.

AI Activator is designed to be practical, so participants need to be able to work hands-on throughout.

Depending on the model, GoodShip* can include or coordinate

  • AI credits
  • platform licences
  • programme materials
  • equipment requirements
Laptop or Chromebook
A device each participant can work on throughout the programme.
Internet access
Reliable connectivity in the delivery venue.
Relevant AI accounts
Accounts for the tools used in the cohort.
Programme tool access
Access to collaboration and prototyping tools.

Requirements are confirmed clearly with the commissioning organisation before each programme.

Facilitated by people who use the tools.

AI Activator is delivered by practitioners working across technology, AI, creativity, product development, business, facilitation and education.

The programme is designed to feel closer to working inside a multidisciplinary project team than attending a conventional training course.

  • Technology

People who build things for a living.

  • AI

Practitioners using these tools on real work.

  • Creativity

    Designers, makers and storytellers.

  • Product development

People used to turning ideas into working things.

  • Business

    Commercial and strategic experience.

  • Facilitation

People who can hold a room and a process.

  • Education

    Experience designing learning that sticks.
