The challenge

The challenge

Immersive technology businesses can face a particular commercial challenge. The technology can be impressive. But customers, investors and partners still need to understand what problem it solves, who it is for, why it matters now and where the strongest commercial opportunity sits.

Ark Immersive had deep capability across immersive environments, 3D, 360 content and spatial experiences. The challenge was helping translate that technical capability into:

  • a clearer market proposition
  • stronger commercial stories
  • more focused target sectors
  • better investor communication
  • stronger digital presence
  • new partnership opportunities

The work became an ongoing relationship rather than a single project.

The question we were trying to answer

How do you turn immersive capability into a business proposition that customers, partners and investors can immediately understand? And where should Ark focus its energy as the market around immersive technology continues to evolve?

The approach

What we did

A fractional strategic relationship

GoodShip* has worked with Ark Immersive as a fractional strategic and critical-friend partner. That means working alongside the leadership team rather than appearing only when a specific deliverable is required.

The relationship has included regular strategic sessions, commercial challenge, market prioritisation, proposition development, partnership thinking, sales strategy, investment thinking, new-market exploration, messaging, digital strategy and practical delivery.

The role is partly to support and partly to question. Not "how do we sell everything Ark can do?" but "which problems, sectors and opportunities are most worth pursuing?"

Sharpening the story

Immersive technology can quickly become difficult to explain. Conversations drift towards headsets, 360 video, volumetric capture, 3D environments, spatial computing, platforms and devices.

But most customers do not buy technology for the sake of technology. They buy better training, stronger engagement, safer learning, improved communication, better patient experiences and access to experiences that are otherwise difficult to deliver.

GoodShip* has worked with Ark to move the story towards those outcomes — what Ark stands for, the problems it solves, who needs those solutions, how different sectors understand the value, and how that story changes for customers, partners and investors.

Website redevelopment

A major part of the relationship has been the redevelopment of Ark Immersive's website, approached as a strategic growth asset rather than a visual refresh. The work included website strategy, content structure, UX thinking, proposition development, messaging, sector positioning, storytelling, design direction and website build.

Delivered through AI Activator

The website redevelopment also became an opportunity to connect Ark with GoodShip*'s AI Activator programme. One of our cohorts worked on Ark as a live organisational challenge, exploring the proposition, customer needs, market positioning, user journeys, content structure, digital storytelling and practical prototyping.

That work then contributed to the redevelopment of Ark's website as part of the wider GoodShip* relationship. AI Activator is not separate from client work — it can become part of the delivery model. The business gains fresh thinking, research, challenge, creative ideas, rapid experimentation and emerging talent, and GoodShip* brings that activity back into the wider strategic and delivery relationship.

A different model of talent and delivery

The Ark website project demonstrates how GoodShip* can connect consultancy, live challenge, emerging talent, strategy, creative and delivery. The cohort was not a substitute for professional delivery; it created a structured environment to research, question, test, prototype and present, with GoodShip* providing the strategic and delivery framework around that work.

For Ark: new perspectives, rapid ideation, audience thinking, digital concepts, emerging talent and connection with future skills.

For participants: genuine business context, client interaction, a live technology brief, practical AI use, digital product experience, portfolio evidence and confidence.

Market development

Rather than positioning Ark as a generic immersive supplier, GoodShip* has helped question and develop propositions around specific areas including healthcare, clinical training, education, workforce development, simulation, visitor experiences and specialist training. The aim is to identify markets where immersive experiences create a clear advantage rather than forcing the technology into places where a simpler solution would work.

Healthcare innovation

GoodShip* has helped connect Ark into wider healthcare innovation conversations, including work around Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. One emerging concept explores whether immersive environments could potentially support people experiencing cancer-related cognitive impairment.

The concept remains exploratory. Ark would bring immersive technology, spatial experience and technical delivery; GoodShip* brings strategy, user experience, ecosystem development, partnership development and commercial thinking; Clatterbridge brings clinical context, patient understanding and a potential test environment. This work is currently seeking the right research, funding and development partners.

Pitch and investment storytelling

The relationship has also included helping Ark improve how the business communicates with investors, partners, customers and collaborators — pitch decks, commercial narrative, growth story, investment proposition, market opportunity and future vision. The purpose is not to make the business sound bigger than it is. It is to make the opportunity easier to understand.

New market opportunities

A significant part of the consultancy relationship is continuing to ask where else Ark's capability could create meaningful value: adjacent sectors, strategic partnerships, university relationships, healthcare, training, research, international opportunities and new commercial models. Not every idea should become a new product — part of GoodShip*'s role is helping Ark decide which opportunities are worth pursuing.

What we made

What was created

The relationship has produced or supported:

  • clearer strategic positioning
  • commercial propositions
  • market prioritisation
  • brand storytelling
  • website strategy and redevelopment
  • UX and content structure
  • pitch decks and investor materials
  • sales narratives
  • partnership opportunities
  • new-market thinking
  • an AI Activator live challenge
  • routes connecting emerging talent into live commercial work

The journey can be expressed as: Technology → Story → Market → Talent → Delivery → Investment → Growth

The impact

What changed

Ark is an ongoing relationship, so we avoid overstating commercial results that have not been independently verified.

The work has created greater clarity around:

  • how the business talks about itself
  • which markets it should focus on
  • how its technology translates into customer value
  • how the website supports that story
  • how investment conversations can be framed
  • where partnerships could open new opportunities

It has also created a practical demonstration of how GoodShip* can connect client delivery with AI Activator.

Why this mattered

Technology businesses are often very good at explaining what the technology does. Growth requires something different.

Customers need to understand the value. Partners need to understand the opportunity. Investors need to understand the market. Talent needs to understand where it can contribute.

Ark's work with GoodShip* is about connecting those pieces. The website redevelopment is also an important example of the connection between our commercial work and our Education & Empowerment programmes: a genuine business challenge, an AI Activator cohort, research and prototyping, GoodShip* strategic interpretation, client delivery, and real-world experience and evidence.

Next chapter

What happened next

The relationship with Ark continues around strategic support, proposition development, market opportunities, partnership development, investment thinking, digital development, healthcare innovation and potential international opportunities.

The website should continue to evolve as Ark's proposition and evidence base develops.

Learning

What we learned

A strong technology does not automatically create a strong proposition. The work is connecting what is technically possible with what somebody genuinely needs — and then telling that story clearly enough that people can act on it.

The Ark relationship also reinforced something else: education and commercial delivery do not have to sit in separate worlds. Give emerging talent a real problem. Give the business fresh thinking. Put the right strategy and professional support around both. Useful things can happen.
